My mother chose a beautiful, mute wife for me. But the moment we were alone after the wedding, she spoke. “We can drop the act now,” she said. “Did your mother never tell you what she did to your father?” ….

My mother was the architect of my life. After my father left, she sacrificed everything for me, and I vowed to never disappoint her. So, when she said she’d found me the perfect bride, I didn’t question it.

“Her name is Sarah,” she said, her voice smooth as polished marble. “An orphan, and most importantly, she’s mute.”

She smiled. “She’s perfect for our family, Michael. No arguments, no yelling, no drama. Who else would want a wife with such a flaw?”

I met her for the first time at the altar. She was stunning. Throughout the ceremony and reception, she played the part of the silent, demure bride to perfection, communicating only with gestures and a small notebook. My mother was incandescent with pride.

That night, in our new apartment, I closed the door behind us. The silence settled. I turned to Sarah, ready to begin our life together.

And that’s when everything I thought I knew was obliterated.

She looked me straight in the eye, her shy smile gone, replaced by something sharp and knowing.

“Finally,” she said, her voice clear and bright as a bell. “Just the two of us, Michael. We can drop the act now.”

Mute?” Sarah smirked, a tired expression that was utterly alien on the face of the demure bride. “No. That was your mother’s creation. She paid me to play the part of the quiet, obedient wife. Said you needed one who wouldn’t argue back.”

My mind reeled. “Who are you?”

“That’s a long story,” she said, her voice now sharp and knowing. “Let’s start with your father. The man your mother told you abandoned you.”

“He ran off with another woman,” I snapped, anger masking my confusion.

“No,” Sarah said softly. She pulled out a worn photograph. In it, a man who looked startlingly like me stood beside a woman and a little girl. “This is my mother, his sister. And this little girl… is me. Your father was my uncle.”

My uncle. I was her cousin.

“He didn’t leave, Michael,” she continued, her voice turning icy. “He went missing. His car was found at the bottom of a lake. And three days before he disappeared, your mother took out a two-million-dollar life insurance policy on him.”

The blood drained from my face.

“Read his journal,” she said, placing an old notebook on the table. “The truth is in there. Then you decide who the villain of your story really is.”

She left, leaving me alone with my father’s words, in a silence more terrifying than her feigned muteness had ever been…..
